Q. My Exemptions Search result says I may be eligible for a prior learning award. How many credits is each exemption worth?
A. You can find current CII units, their levels and credit values from the individual qualifications.
Q. I was hoping my business degree would attract exemptions from CII insurance units (M92) Insurance business and finance and (990) Insurance corporate management. Why doesn't it?
A. Unless the university has specifically designed the syllabus around the CII unit(s) there is insufficient syllabus match to award an exemption. These CII units have a strong insurance focus whereas most business degrees are more generic. Where business degrees contain learning that partially matches a range of CII qualification units, they attract non unit-specific credits at the relevant level(s) within the CII qualifications framework.
Q. My degree isn't doesn't appear within the Exemptions Search. Does this mean I won't be awarded recognition of prior learning?
A. This may be because we haven't previously received applications for this qualification. Please make an application so we can identify next steps. For degrees, please select the generic 'Other university' and or 'not listed' qualification entries. However, if these don't describe your qualification, please type the names as they appear within your qualification documentation.
Q. I have a business degree awarded by a non-UK university and the Exemptions Search result states I may be eligible to 25 Diploma-level non unit-specific credits. This is less than the standard award for similar degrees from UK universities. Why is this?
A. Our experience of reviewing qualifications from different countries tells us that assessments standards vary between countries. The UK education regulator ensures that UK degrees are of a comparable standard to CII Advanced Diploma level. Our reviews of degrees from some other countries have identified many degrees assessed at the equivalent to CII Diploma level. Our benchmark offer approach means if we receive evidence that the assessment is equivalent to CII Advanced Diploma we would be pleased to reconsider within 3 months of the application outcome.
Q. The Exemptions Search results are for a different version to the qualification I completed. What is the recognition of prior learning award for my version?
A. Please make an application for recognition of prior learning so we may advise you of next steps.
Q. I want to use my Exemptions Search results to plan my CII study route. How can I work out which units I need to pass?
A. We recommend that you use a combination of the exemptions search results, your CII learning statement and refer to the completion requirements for your intended CII qualification. We recommend that you apply for your exemption(s) as soon as you receive your completion / graduation certificate and results transcript because recognition of prior learning awards can be subject to change since they are linked to the CII qualifications framework. Recognition of prior learning awards will not appear on your learning statement until your award has been confirmed and you have paid for your credits.
Q. I work for an awarding organisation whose qualifications match CII qualifications and CII hasn't recently reviewed the match. Can I submit qualification details to CII on behalf of my students?
A. We welcome offers from universities and other awarding organisations to work with CII to promote CII qualifications to their students. Where an awarding organisation has proactively sent us the material to determine prior learning eligibility we don't need to place the onus on the graduate.
This enables us to process applications more quickly and helps to reduce instances where candidates receive no recognition of prior learning because they are unable to provide the qualification material we require. We have created a guidance document and application form for universities and other awarding organisations.
