Professional Standards Board

The role of the Professional Standards Board is to advise the CII Board of the CII on the setting of standards for achievement of excellence and to offer guidance on CII Member and CII Internal Governance Standards.

Protecting the public interest central to the CII's purpose

The PSB published its Annual Report for 2015 which highlights the importance of the financial services and general insurance professions actively supporting robust self regulation.  The report sets out the purpose and composition of the PSB, and looks at how the sector is progressing against the public interest challenge of improving professional standards, including details of disciplinary activity for this period.

The report, which provides an oversight on the progress in professional standards across the financial services and general insurance markets, covers the programme of work undertaken by the CII's Professional Standards Board in 2015 - a year where professional standards, conduct and public trust and confidence in the broader financial services sector were prominent on the public agenda.

The Professional Standards Board recognises that in seeking a more representative selection of people to sit on its governance committee's the CII would gain a number of advantages:

  • The ability to draw upon a wider range of skills and experience;
  • The likelihood of better quality decision making;
  • A greater accountability to the member;
  • An increase in member/public confidence in its system of Appointments.
  • The PSB has decided to further research best practice in this.

The PSB recognises that current best practice in the area of transparency involves:

  • The organisation of 'open' meetings;
  • Setting up more specialised consultation bodies for important interest groups;
  • Publishing an annual report which includes information on the role and remit of the body, its plans or strategy; the membership of the board; and where further information can be obtained;
  • Making audit reports more widely available;
  • Making agendas and minutes available where appropriate;
  • Publicising forthcoming meetings and summarising decisions;
  • Making publications available as widely as possible, for example by sending them to interested parties and putting them in local public libraries.

The Professional Standards Board members are:

  • David Hertzell, Chairman
  • Sian Fisher, Chief Executive Officer
  • Professor Charles W Munn, OBE, BA, PhD, FCIBS - Education Representative
